What is a syllable?
It is the parts of a word, broken into sounds.
Look at these words, and see how many syllables they have:
Happy = 2 syllables HA + PPY
Serious = 3 syllables SE + RI + OUS
Independent = 4 syllables IN + DE + PEN + DENT
Pronunciation:
In any word, one syllable (part) is stressed. This is the longest vowel sound.
In the character adjective happy, the first syllable is stressed (HA-ppy).
Listen and repeat the character adjectives again. Notice which syllable is stressed. Play the audio beneath each list of adjectives.

When we answer this question, we use the verb to be and a character adjective.
For example:
She’s cheerful.
